Day 30 - AMOS (When Hating is Good)
Seek good and not evil, That you may live; So the Lord God of hosts will be with you, As you have spoken. Hate evil, love good; (Amos 5:14-15a)
The prophet Amos proclaimed the coming judgment of God upon Israel if they do not repent of their sins. The judgment eventually came and Israel ceased to be a nation because the Jews chose not to repent but God never tired of warning His people through His prophets as in the passage above.
The warning applies to us today as well. We are commanded to love good and hate evil with a wonderful promise of God’s presence with us if we do. I believe that this is the only instance when it is acceptable to God for us to hate according to the Bible. As my family can testify, I pray everyday for myself and everyone in my family for God to help us to hate sin and to love good. “Lord, help me direct all hatred in my heart towards sin and help me to love what is good. Amen.”
