Day 54 - 1 Timothy

66-DAY JOURNEY OF THE BIBLE
Day 54 - 1 Timothy (The Love of Money)
(to check out past posts, click: tonyvicreyes.blogspot.com )

“Now godliness with contentment is great gain.  For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out.  And having food and clothing, with these we shall be content.  But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and harmful lusts which drown men in destruction and perdition.  For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, for which some have strayed from the faith in their greediness, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.”  (1 Timothy 6:6-10)

The Bible never said that money is the root of all evil.  Rather, as our text above state, “the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil.”  Money in and of itself is no different than any other material thing; it can be used for good or for evil.

The temptation to be rich is may be strongest temptation that every person faces.  Many individuals who are normally good law-abiding citizens will do anything for the right amount of money.  The counsel from God in today’s Scripture passage to pursue godliness with contentment could be one of the most important that anyone could adhere to in order to avoid “many foolish and harmful lusts which drown men in destruction and perdition.”

If you desire to be truly rich in this world as well as in the kingdom of God, try this as your new year’s resolution:

I will be content with having food and clothing and a roof over my head and I will live as simply as I can in 2015.  I will also pursue godliness instead of riches as my goal in life.

I can assure you that if you adopt the resolution above, you will know what it means to be truly rich not just in this world but especially in the eyes of God.
